A magnetic stage actor whose voice and presence defined British theatre and television for a generation.
Alan Badel emerged from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art with a voice of startling power and a physical intensity that made him a natural for the stage. He became a cornerstone of the mid-century British theatre, commanding leading roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company and in the West End, often in complex, psychologically charged parts. While film offered him fewer opportunities, his television work, particularly in the 1970s, brought his formidable talent into living rooms, most memorably as the enigmatic Rochester in a celebrated adaptation of 'Jane Eyre'. His career was cut short by his death at 58, but he left behind a legacy of performances noted for their intellectual rigor and emotional depth.
