Akihiko Hoshide commanded the International Space Station in 2022, becoming only the second Japanese citizen to hold that post. His career began with the National Space Development Agency of Japan in 1992, leading to his selection as an astronaut candidate in 1999. Hoshide logged over 340 days in space across three missions, including a pivotal role in the 2012 assembly of the station's main truss during a critical spacewalk. A mechanical engineer by training, he operated the station's robotic Canadarm2 with precision to capture visiting cargo spacecraft. His leadership during Expedition 66 oversaw hundreds of scientific experiments in microgravity. Hoshide's work expanded Japan's operational role in orbital science. His technical fluency and command bridged international partnerships, setting a precedent for future non-American commanders. He remains a key figure in Japan's aerospace ambitions, mentoring the next generation for lunar missions.
1965–1980
The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Akihiko was born in 1968, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
