Biography

Ahmed Zaki Yamani, with his distinctive beard and measured tone, became the global face of oil power in the 20th century. Trained in law at Harvard, he was appointed Saudi Arabia's Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources in 1962, a post he would hold for 24 years. Yamani masterfully wielded oil as an instrument of statecraft, most famously during the 1973 oil embargo, where his negotiations turned crude into a potent political weapon. He was a central architect of Saudi Arabia's strategy to nationalize its oil industry, gradually gaining control from Western companies. While advocating for moderate prices to ensure long-term market stability, his tenure was defined by the turbulent shift of economic might from consuming nations to producers. His later years were spent in private business and Islamic scholarship, leaving a legacy as the cerebral strategist behind the kingdom's rise as an energy superpower.

The Silent Generation

1928–1945

Born between the Depression and the end of WWII. Too young to fight, old enough to remember. They became the conformist middle managers of the 1950s — and the civil rights leaders who quietly dismantled Jim Crow.

Ahmed was born in 1930, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
