A philosophy professor who unleashed a brutal Maoist insurgency, plunging Peru into a dark decade of terror and conflict.
Abimael Guzmán was an academic who traded the lecture hall for the guerrilla camp. A professor of philosophy in Ayacucho, he became a fervent adherent of Maoism, convinced that Peru's indigenous peasantry were the revolutionary vanguard. In 1970, he founded the Communist Party of Peru, known as the Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso). His ideology was rigid, dogmatic, and violently utopian. Launching an armed struggle in 1980, Guzmán sought to dismantle the Peruvian state through calculated brutality, targeting officials, community leaders, and anyone deemed an obstacle. The resulting conflict, a clash between the Shining Path's terror and the state's often savage response, caused immense suffering, primarily among rural indigenous communities. His capture in 1992, found in a Lima safehouse, was a turning point that significantly degraded the insurgency, though his legacy is one of profound national trauma.

Abimael was born in 1934, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
