A veteran opposition leader who finally won the presidency at 73, he oversaw a major infrastructure boom in Senegal while his long rule ended in contentious debate.
For decades, Abdoulaye Wade was the persistent challenger, a Paris-educated lawyer and founder of the Senegalese Democratic Party who stood as the primary opposition to the socialist government that had led Senegal since independence. His path to power was a lesson in endurance, contesting and losing multiple presidential elections before finally breaking through in 2000 at the age of 73, becoming Africa's oldest elected head of state at the time. His presidency was marked by ambitious, visible projects, most notably the African Renaissance Monument, a colossal statue in Dakar intended to symbolize the continent's emergence. He invested heavily in roads and infrastructure, branding Senegal as an emerging hub. However, his later push to change the constitution and run for a controversial third term sparked massive protests and eroded his democratic credentials. His 2012 electoral loss to Macky Sall was notable for its peacefulness, a testament to Senegal's political stability, which Wade, both as critic and leader, had inhabited for over half a century.
