The visionary Bedouin leader who transformed a scattering of desert tribes into the wealthy, unified federation known as the United Arab Emirates.
Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's story is the story of the UAE. As a young governor of Abu Dhabi's eastern region, he learned the land and its people, investing early oil revenues into schools, hospitals, and infrastructure. In 1966, he became Ruler of Abu Dhabi and immediately turned his ambition toward a grander project: unification. With patience and persuasive diplomacy, he convinced six neighboring emirs to join him in 1971, creating a new country. As its first President, Zayed channeled immense oil wealth into a breathtaking modernization campaign, while insisting on preserving Arab heritage and Islamic values. His deep personal connection to the environment led to massive greening projects, turning swathes of desert green. He ruled for over three decades, shaping a nation from a dream of collective strength.
