A firebrand Hindu monk turned political leader who has reshaped India's most populous state with a potent mix of religious nationalism and assertive governance.
Born Ajay Singh Bisht in 1972, the man who would become Yogi Adityanath left home as a teenager, drawn to the austere life of a Hindu monastic order in Gorakhpur. His rise within the order was swift, and by 26, he was its head, inheriting a platform of religious influence he would deftly convert into political power. Elected to parliament five times from Gorakhpur, his rhetoric often stirred controversy, positioning him as a polarizing defender of Hindu interests. In a strategic move, the BJP appointed him Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 2017, a role where he has shed some of his monk's robes for administrative ones, overseeing massive infrastructure projects and implementing policies critics call socially divisive. His tenure, marked by a no-nonsense approach to law and order and a focus on Hindu cultural symbols, has made him a defining and formidable figure in contemporary Indian politics.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Yogi was born in 1972, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
