A populist political force in Andhra Pradesh, he connected directly with rural voters through massive welfare schemes and a folksy, approachable style.
Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy walked over 900 miles across Andhra Pradesh to listen to villagers' grievances, a 'padayatra' that built his reputation as a man of the rural poor. A medical doctor turned politician, he was elected chief minister in 2004. He launched free electricity for farmers and a health insurance scheme for the impoverished. His tenure brought significant rural investment but also controversy. His sudden death in a 2009 helicopter crash shocked the state and triggered a political realignment. His son eventually succeeded him.
