A physically gifted NFL cornerback whose career was marked by high-level play and an unforgettable, mid-game retirement that stunned the sports world.
Vontae Davis possessed the kind of raw athletic talent that made him a first-round NFL draft pick. At the University of Illinois, he was a standout, and he carried that promise to the Miami Dolphins and later the Indianapolis Colts, where he hit his peak. With the Colts, Davis developed into one of the league's more formidable cover corners, using his speed and instincts to shut down receivers, earning Pro Bowl honors in 2014 and 2015. His career, however, became permanently defined by its abrupt and unprecedented conclusion. At halftime during a 2018 game with the Buffalo Bills, Davis simply walked off the field and retired, stating his body could no longer perform at an NFL level. This decisive, controversial act cemented his legacy as a man who walked away on his own terms.

Vontae was born in 1988, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
