A silky-smooth Finnish center whose intelligent two-way play made him a crucial component of championship teams in Detroit and Tampa Bay.
Valtteri Filppula brought a distinct brand of Finnish hockey elegance to the NHL for over 1,000 games. Drafted by the Detroit Red Wings, he developed within their famed system, learning from veterans like Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk. His game was not defined by brute force but by exceptional skating, slick puck-handling, and a sharp hockey mind that made him effective at both ends of the ice. He peaked as a top-six forward for the Red Wings, contributing to their 2008 Stanley Cup victory with his responsible play. Seeking a larger role, he signed with Tampa Bay and became a veteran leader for a young core that included Steven Stamkos, eventually helping the Lightning reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2015. A return to Detroit and stops with the Flyers and Islanders followed, before he concluded his NHL career where it started. With a resume boasting multiple championships on both sides of the Atlantic, Filppula retired as one of the most successful Finnish players of his era.

Valtteri was born in 1984, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
