An Estonian scholar who became the foundational architect of his country's early music revival, teaching generations to hear the past anew.
In the constrained cultural atmosphere of Soviet Estonia, Tõnu Sepp cultivated a sanctuary for ancient sound. As a musicologist and teacher, his life’s work has been the meticulous reconstruction and propagation of early music—the medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque repertoires largely silenced by time and politics. He didn’t just study manuscripts; he built a movement. Through his teaching at the Tallinn Music School and later the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, Sepp equipped students with the techniques and historical understanding to play forgotten instruments like the viola da gamba and the lute. He co-founded the early music ensemble Hortus Musicus in 1972, a group that became a beacon of authentic performance practice behind the Iron Curtain and beyond. His gentle, persistent dedication earned him the informal title of Estonia's 'grand old man of early music,' a testament to his role as the quiet cornerstone upon which a rich, historically informed musical culture now stands.
1946–1964
The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Tõnu was born in 1946, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
