A midfield metronome whose preternatural passing accuracy and calm dictated the tempo for a generation of European champions.
Toni Kroos never seemed to rush. From his early days in Greifswald, his talent was defined by a serene, almost casual mastery of the ball. Snapped up by Bayern Munich as a teenager, he quickly demonstrated a mind that saw the game two moves ahead of everyone else. A loan to Bayer Leverkusen proved he was ready, and he returned to become the central nervous system of a dominant Bayern side. His 2014 move to Real Madrid, for a modest fee, became one of the most consequential transfers of the decade. In Madrid's white shirt, Kroos's left foot conducted symphonies. He partnered with Luka Modrić to form an imperious midfield core, winning multiple Champions League titles and delivering passes that sliced through defenses with geometric perfection. For Germany, he was the steady hand that guided them to World Cup glory in 2014. He retired after Euro 2024 on his own terms, leaving as the player who made the difficult art of controlling a game look utterly simple.

Toni was born in 1990, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
