The Badfinger bassist who co-wrote 'Without You,' a ballad of heartbreak that became a global standard, yet his own story ended in tragedy.
Tom Evans's life is a cornerstone of one of pop's most bittersweet and cautionary tales. A working-class Liverpool musician, he joined the Iveys, which evolved into Badfinger, the first band signed to The Beatles' Apple label. Blessed with melodic genius, Evans co-wrote (with bandmate Pete Ham) the aching power ballad 'Without You' for their 1970 album. The song's potential, however, was unlocked by others: Harry Nilsson's 1971 version became a global chart-topper, and Mariah Carey's 1994 cover repeated the feat. For Evans, this should have meant security. Instead, it underscored a career marred by disastrous business management and legal battles over royalties. The band's fortunes crumbled amid allegations of withheld earnings. The pressure proved catastrophic; Ham died by suicide in 1975. Evans carried on, struggling to revive the band and his finances, but the shadow never lifted. In 1983, he too died by suicide. His legacy is dual: the timeless, soaring melody of 'Without You,' a song that has comforted millions, and a stark reminder of the music industry's often brutal machinery.
1946–1964
The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Tom was born in 1947, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
