German director who captured the gritty, anarchic spirit of 90s Berlin with the cult street film 'Knocking on Heaven's Door'.
Thomas Jahn emerged from the vibrant, chaotic film scene of post-reunification Berlin. He didn't take a traditional path through film school, but instead dove into the practical world of set construction and assistant directing. This hands-on education informed his breakout work. In 1997, he co-wrote and directed 'Knocking on Heaven's Door,' a road movie about two terminally ill young men on one last adventure. Starring a young Til Schweiger and Jan Josef Liefers, the film was a raw, sentimental, and darkly funny portrait that struck a massive chord in Germany, becoming a defining cult movie of its generation. While that film remains his most recognized work, Jahn built a steady career in German television, directing episodes of popular crime series like 'Tatort' and 'Ein Starkes Team.' His style often retains that early affinity for character-driven stories with an edge of realism and emotional punch.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Thomas was born in 1965, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
