A soul provocateur who stormed the 80s with a debut album of raw passion, then reinvented himself entirely as Sananda Maitreya.
Arriving in a burst of sequins and supreme confidence, Terence Trent D'Arby didn't just release a debut album in 1987; he issued a manifesto. 'Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby' was a swaggering fusion of soul, rock, and pop that declared a new, androgynous prince had arrived, and the world listened, sending it to number one globally. His voice, a weapon of pure, aching emotion, powered hits like 'Sign Your Name' and 'Wishing Well.' But the pressure of instant superstardom and his own mercurial nature led to a commercial decline. In a move that stunned the industry, he legally changed his name to Sananda Francesco Maitreya in 2001, shedding his past identity to pursue music free from expectation. While mainstream fame receded, Maitreya continued to produce a prolific stream of ambitious, genre-defying albums for a devoted following, his journey a testament to the cost and necessity of artistic self-ownership.

Terence was born in 1962, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
