A dedicated sovereigntist voice from the Saguenay who championed regional economic development and served as the steadying hand as interim leader of the Parti Québécois.
Sylvain Gaudreault's political life is deeply rooted in the industrial heartland of the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region. A teacher by training, he entered the National Assembly of Quebec in 2007, representing Jonquière with a focus on the economic concerns of his constituents, from aluminum smelters to forestry. A committed member of the Parti Québécois, his approach was often pragmatic, emphasizing job creation and regional equity alongside the party's traditional sovereignty goals. His colleagues recognized his calm, consensus-building demeanor, which led to his selection as interim leader of the PQ in 2016 following a sudden resignation. For seven months, he guided the party without drama, refusing to seek the permanent leadership but ensuring its stability. He served in several shadow cabinet roles and as a minister in the short-lived Marois government, responsible for regional development, before retiring from politics in 2022.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Sylvain was born in 1970, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
