A former army chief who stepped into the political vacuum after a military coup, leading Thailand's interim government with a quiet, soldierly demeanor.
Surayud Chulanont served as Prime Minister of Thailand from 2006 to 2008. The retired general was selected by the military junta after a coup ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Born into a military family in 1943, Surayud built his career in the Royal Thai Army, eventually rising to Supreme Commander. The junta chose him as a politically neutral figure with royal endorsement. His government drafted a new constitution and attempted to restore political stability. But the economy slowed, and persistent tensions troubled his tenure. After leaving office, he returned to royal service as a Privy Councillor, placing him among the closest advisors to the King.

Surayud was born in 1943, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
