A visionary guitarist and violinist who fused classical grandeur with visceral rock energy, defining the visual kei movement as a core architect of Luna Sea's sound.
Sugizo, born Yasuhiro Sugihara in 1969, co-founded Luna Sea in the late 1980s, helping propel visual kei from an underground scene to mainstream Japanese rock phenomenon. On stage, he plays fierce guitar riffs and draws achingly beautiful lines from his electric violin. His career extends beyond the band through collaborations across genres, from electronic projects like Juno Reactor to supergroups like X Japan, which he joined as a supporting member. Sugizo's work is imbued with a spiritual, pacifist philosophy; he has performed at peace rallies and composed music for meditation. He remains a bridge between 90s rock spectacle and a globally-conscious artistry.
1965–1980
The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Sugizo was born in 1969, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
