A German pole vault pioneer who consistently soared among the world's best, claiming European silver and pushing the national record higher.
With a distinctive blonde ponytail trailing behind her, Silke Spiegelburg was a fixture at major championships for nearly a decade, representing a golden era of German women's pole vaulting. Her career was a model of high-level consistency. She made her first Olympic team at just 18 in Athens and went on to compete in three Games, a testament to her durability in a punishing event. While an Olympic medal eluded her, she excelled on the European stage, securing silver medals both indoors and outdoors. Spiegelburg repeatedly battled with and often bested the world's top vaulters, including Yelena Isinbayeva, and she held the German national record for several years. Her technical precision and competitive fire made her one of the most respected athletes in the field, paving the way for future German vaulters.

Silke was born in 1986, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
