The self-destructive bassist for the Sex Pistols who became punk's ultimate symbol of chaotic, tragic rebellion.
Sid Vicious was less a musician than a living exhibit, the human embodiment of the punk rock explosion's most dangerous fantasies. Born John Simon Ritchie, he was a friend of Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon before being thrust into the band more for his menacing image and chaotic energy than any musical prowess. His tenure with the Pistols was a blur of on-stage violence, rampant drug use, and tabloid notoriety, crystallizing the movement's 'no future' ethos. His life spiraled further after the band's collapse, marked by his arrest for the murder of his girlfriend Nancy Spungen in New York's Chelsea Hotel. His death from a heroin overdose while out on bail, at age 21, sealed his myth. Vicious left behind almost no musical legacy of value, but his brief, brutal arc made him an everlasting avatar of punk's destructive and nihilistic side.
