A late-blooming sumo wrestler from a fishing town who used technical skill and determination to reach the sport's top division.
Shimanoumi Kōyō debuted in sumo's top makuuchi division in 2019 after entering professional wrestling at age 22, late by traditional standards. From Shima, a city of pearl divers and fishermen, he joined the Kise stable and climbed the ranks with a studious approach and solid technique. As a maegashira, he defeated higher-ranked opponents using well-timed throws and strategic moves. His career demonstrates that dedication and clever wrestling can reach the summit even when the climb starts later than usual.

The first digital natives. Grew up with the internet, came of age during 9/11 and the 2008 crash. Highly educated, deeply indebted, slower to marry and buy houses. Redefined work, identity, and what it means to be an adult.
Shimanoumi was born in 1989, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
