The ethereal voice and visionary frontwoman of Within Temptation, who helped define symphonic metal with her powerful vocals and gothic-inspired aesthetic.
Sharon den Adel is the haunting voice and creative force behind Within Temptation, a band that painted heavy metal with orchestral grandeur. Growing up in the Netherlands, she was drawn to music and fashion from a young age, performing in bands by 14. In 1996, she co-founded the group with guitarist Robert Westerholt, her life and creative partner. Their 1997 debut introduced a blend of metal and classical elements, but it was the 2000 album 'Mother Earth' that catapulted them to fame, with den Adel's crystalline soprano soaring over cinematic soundscapes. More than just a singer, she is the band's visual architect, designing the elaborate, fantasy-tinged stage costumes and artwork that complete their immersive world. Her influence helped move symphonic metal from a niche genre to a mainstream European powerhouse.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Sharon was born in 1974, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
