A tenacious defensive midfielder whose physical presence and leadership anchored Ecuador's historic runs in the 2006 World Cup and beyond.
Segundo Castillo was the engine room enforcer for a golden generation of Ecuadorian football. With his distinctive dreadlocks and uncompromising style, he formed a formidable partnership in central midfield, providing the steel that allowed his more creative teammates to flourish. His career peaked with the national team, where he was instrumental in Ecuador's qualification for the 2006 FIFA World Cup and their run to the round of 16, a historic achievement for the country. Club journeys took him from Ecuador's Emelec to spells in Turkey, England with Everton, and Mexico. After retiring, he transitioned into coaching, taking the helm at Barcelona SC, one of Ecuador's biggest clubs, aiming to impart the same discipline and grit that defined his playing days.
