A loyal one-club defender who became a fan symbol for Union Berlin, later transitioning into a key coaching role for their Bundesliga ascent.
Sebastian Bönig's story is inextricably linked with 1. FC Union Berlin. While his early career included time in the Bayern Munich system and at LR Ahlen, it was upon joining Union in 2006 that he found his home. A tough, committed left-back, he embodied the gritty, collective spirit of the club from the old Alte Försterei stadium. He was a fixture in the side for nearly a decade, helping them climb from the third division to establish themselves in the 2. Bundesliga. After retiring, his deep understanding of the club's culture made his transition to coaching inevitable. Rising through the youth ranks, he now serves as a trusted assistant manager for the first team, helping guide Union on their remarkable journey to the Bundesliga and European competition.
