An American journalist turned Ukrainian soldier, whose journey from Las Vegas politics to the trenches of war defies any simple label.
Sarah Ashton-Cirillo's path is a modern odyssey of reinvention and conviction. A political operative and journalist from Las Vegas, she arrived in Ukraine in the chaotic early weeks of the full-scale Russian invasion, intending to report. The reality on the ground quickly reshaped her role. She stayed, first as a war correspondent, then as a negotiator securing medical aid, and finally as a soldier, enlisting in Ukraine's Territorial Defense Forces. Trained as a combat medic, she served on the front lines, her public-facing role as an English-language spokesperson for the TDF making her a recognizable and controversial figure in the information war. Her story—a transgender American woman fighting in a foreign war—challenges conventional narratives, embodying the complex, personal stakes of a global conflict and the unpredictable ways people find purpose in the midst of chaos.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Sarah was born in 1977, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
