A freestyle skiing world champion whose brilliant career was tragically cut short by the Kaprun cable car fire.
Sandra Schmitt was a force of nature on the moguls course, a German skier who combined technical precision with fearless speed. Bursting onto the international scene as a teenager, she announced her arrival with a ninth-place finish at the 1998 Nagano Olympics. The following year, she reached the summit of her sport, capturing the Women's Dual Moguls World Championship title. Schmitt represented a new, aggressive generation in freestyle skiing, her performances marked by a powerful, direct style that thrilled judges and crowds. Her life and soaring potential ended heartbreakingly in November 2000, when she and her parents were among the 155 victims of the Kaprun tunnel fire in Austria. Her legacy is one of immense talent and promise, forever remembered in the skiing community.
