The visionary producer and director who helped craft a DIY hip-hop phenomenon, blending social messages with anthemic, chart-topping production.
Ryan Lewis produced 'The Heist,' an album created without label support that crashed the mainstream in 2012. A photographer and graphic designer by training, he teamed up with rapper Macklemore in Seattle to form an independent duo. Lewis built lush, layered soundscapes from sampled horns, soulful vocals, and pounding drums. His meticulous eye shaped the duo's music videos. 'Thrift Shop' and 'Same Love' became massive hits. Lewis was the strategic and aesthetic mastermind behind their viral ascent, making him the defining creative force behind one of pop's most unexpected success stories.
