Biography

Roza Shanina's story is one of grim determination and exceptional skill forged in the crucible of World War II's Eastern Front. After her brother was killed in 1941, she left her studies and, against initial resistance, volunteered for the military, specifically requesting sniper duty. Trained in a women's sniper school, she quickly gained a reputation for 'doublets'—hitting two targets in quick succession. Fighting in the brutal Vilnius and East Prussian campaigns, her tally of confirmed kills grew rapidly, and her diary, published after her death, revealed a complex young woman grappling with the horrors of war. She was killed shielding a wounded artillery officer, a final act of bravery for a soldier who became a folk heroine.

Did You Know?

She kept a wartime diary that was published after her death, offering a personal view of the conflict.

Shanina was one of the first Soviet female snipers to be credited with a 'doublet' (two shots hitting two targets in quick succession).

She initially volunteered for the military after her brother's death but was rejected; she persisted by studying at a nursing school before finally being accepted for sniper training.

A Russian film, 'Battle for the Sky', featured a character based on her.

“I see the scope's crosshairs, the snow, and the target. Nothing else exists.”

— Roza Shanina
