A fearless Soviet sniper who became a symbol of resistance, celebrated for her deadly accuracy and voluntary service on the brutal Eastern Front.
Roza Shanina's story is one of grim determination and exceptional skill forged in the crucible of World War II's Eastern Front. After her brother was killed in 1941, she left her studies and, against initial resistance, volunteered for the military, specifically requesting sniper duty. Trained in a women's sniper school, she quickly gained a reputation for 'doublets'—hitting two targets in quick succession. Fighting in the brutal Vilnius and East Prussian campaigns, her tally of confirmed kills grew rapidly, and her diary, published after her death, revealed a complex young woman grappling with the horrors of war. She was killed shielding a wounded artillery officer, a final act of bravery for a soldier who became a folk heroine.
