A cosmetics empire heir who channeled his wealth into rebuilding Jewish cultural life in Central Europe and advocating for Israel.
Ronald Lauder's life extends far beyond the boardrooms of the Estée Lauder company he inherited. While he served as a U.S. ambassador to Austria and held corporate roles, his defining work is philanthropic. In the wake of the Cold War, he recognized a desperate need to revive Jewish communities crushed by the Holocaust and communism. He poured resources into restoring synagogues, funding schools, and supporting cultural institutions across Central and Eastern Europe. His passion for art led to the founding of New York's Neue Galerie, dedicated to German and Austrian art. A staunch political defender of Israel, Lauder has also served as president of the World Jewish Congress, using his influence and fortune as tools for cultural preservation and diplomatic advocacy.

Ronald was born in 1944, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
