A New Jersey political scion who wielded the federal purse strings as a powerful and pragmatic House appropriations chairman.
For nearly a quarter-century, Rodney Frelinghuysen was the embodiment of old-school, establishment Republicanism in North Jersey. Hailing from a political dynasty that dates back to the American Revolution, he brought a patrician's demeanor to the rough-and-tumble of Congress. Representing one of the wealthiest districts in the country, he mastered the art of directing federal funds back home, securing millions for local projects, environmental cleanup, and military installations. While reliably conservative, he was known as a deal-maker, a member of the 'cardigan sweater' wing of the GOP who valued governance over grandstanding. His crowning role came in his final term when he ascended to the chairmanship of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, one of the most influential posts in Washington. His 2018 retirement announcement, amid a shifting political climate, marked the end of an era for a certain kind of Northeastern Republican.
1946–1964
The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Rodney was born in 1946, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
