A Cree athlete who channeled a fighter's spirit from the boxing ring into a decade-long NHL career as a feared enforcer, later becoming a respected coach.
Rocky Thompson's story in hockey is one of sheer willpower defining a role. Drafted by Calgary, his path to the NHL wasn't built on finesse scoring but on an uncompromising physical presence. He carved out a niche as an enforcer, a player whose readiness to defend teammates earned him respect and over 100 NHL games with multiple clubs. This toughness had deep roots; as a teenager, he was a promising boxer, even winning gold at the 1993 North American Indigenous Games. That fighter's mentality translated directly to the ice. When his playing days ended, Thompson didn't leave the game. He moved into coaching, demonstrating a strategic mind that understood all aspects of play. His work developing young talent in the AHL was recognized with a Stanley Cup ring as an assistant with the St. Louis Blues in 2019, proving his value extended far beyond the penalty box. His journey from Indigenous boxing champion to NHL mainstay and champion coach is uniquely his own.

Rocky was born in 1977, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
