An actor whose portrayal of a scarred, sweater-clad dream stalker forever changed the landscape of horror and pop culture.
Robert Englund was a working character actor with a background in classical theater before a single role seared him into the global consciousness. Trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, he bounced between television guest spots and B-movies, often playing weaselly or eccentric parts. Then came Wes Craven's 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' in 1984. Englund didn't just play Freddy Krueger; he infused the child murderer with a sadistic, pun-loving glee that was both terrifying and weirdly charismatic. His physical performance—the clawed glove, the burnt makeup, the predatory slouch—became instantly iconic. For seven sequels and a television series, Englund was Freddy, evolving the character into a wisecracking pop culture phenomenon of the late 80s and early 90s. While the role typecast him, he embraced it with intelligence, understanding that Freddy tapped into a universal fear of sleep and vulnerability, securing his permanent place in the horror pantheon.

Robert was born in 1947, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
