He captured the serene tension of California light and space, moving between figurative intimacy and expansive, luminous abstraction.
Richard Diebenkorn's artistic journey was a lifelong, restless negotiation between observation and abstraction. He began in the 1950s as a leading figure of the Bay Area Figurative Movement, painting interiors and landscapes with a lush, melancholy grace that stood apart from New York's dominant Abstract Expressionism. These works, like the 'Berkeley' series, were grounded in place. Then, in 1967, he moved to Santa Monica and entered his most celebrated period. The 'Ocean Park' series, named for his studio's neighborhood, became his life's work for 25 years. These large-scale canvases are fields of luminous color divided by penciled lines—architectural yet soft, geometric yet breathing with the Pacific light. Diebenkorn never saw a conflict between the figurative and the abstract; for him, both were ways to organize his experience of the world. His paintings are quiet meditations that hold the specific atmosphere of California within a universally resonant formal language.
