Ramzan Kadyrov's life story mirrors the turbulent modern history of Chechnya itself. Born in 1976, he grew up during the Chechen wars, the son of Akhmad Kadyrov, a former separatist mufti who later switched sides to lead a Moscow-backed administration. After his father's assassination in 2004, Ramzan, then leading a powerful militia, was groomed by the Kremlin for leadership. He became head of the Chechen Republic in 2007, presiding over a dramatic reconstruction of the war-ravaged capital, Grozny, funded by massive Russian federal subsidies.
