He transformed the Native American cedar flute from a ceremonial instrument into a vehicle for contemporary composition, creating a globally resonant soundscape.
R. Carlos Nakai's journey to becoming the most recognizable Native American flutist in the world began with a closed door. Of Navajo and Ute heritage, he initially trained on brass instruments and served in the U.S. Navy. A car accident damaged his mouth, ending his trumpet career. This loss led him to the traditional cedar flute, an instrument he taught himself to play. Rejecting mere replication of older melodies, Nakai began composing original works that blended the flute's ancient voice with influences from classical, jazz, and world music. His 1983 debut album, 'Changes,' signaled a new direction. A prolific partnership with Canyon Records produced over fifty albums, bringing the haunting sound of the cedar flute into living rooms worldwide. Nakai's music is neither purely traditional nor purely contemporary; it exists in a space he carved out himself, one of personal expression and cultural dialogue. His work has inspired a generation of musicians and fundamentally expanded the perception of what Native American music can be.

R. was born in 1946, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
