A technocrat finance minister thrust into Bulgaria's top political job during a period of profound public unrest and anti-government protests.
Plamen Oresharski's career is that of a fiscal expert who found himself at the storm center of Bulgarian politics. An economist by training, he built his reputation in the 1990s and 2000s as a steady, non-partisan hand in finance, serving as Deputy Minister and then Minister of Finance in different administrations. In 2013, following an election that produced no clear winner, the Bulgarian Socialist Party nominated Oresharski, an independent, to lead a technocratic government. His tenure as Prime Minister was defined almost immediately by crisis. Massive, sustained street protests erupted over a controversial official appointment, evolving into broader demonstrations against corruption and oligarchic influence. Oresharski's government, perceived as fragile and beholden to backroom interests, became a focal point for public anger. He managed to serve for just over a year, navigating a deeply fractured parliament and economic challenges, before resigning. His premiership is largely remembered as a chapter in Bulgaria's persistent struggle with political instability and public trust.

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Plamen was born in 1960, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
