A fierce openside flanker whose relentless work ethic on the field now fuels his mission to revive Australian rugby from the boardroom.
Phil Waugh’s story is one of tenacity, first expressed on the rugby pitch and now in the executive suite. Born in Sydney, he carved out a reputation as one of Australia's most dogged and intelligent loose forwards, a player whose presence was felt in every tackle and at every breakdown. His entire professional career was spent with the NSW Waratahs, where his leadership saw him captain the side, and his 79 caps for the Wallabies placed him in the heart of some of the nation's most bruising international contests. Retirement didn't mean leaving the game; instead, Waugh moved into finance and rugby administration, bringing a player's understanding to business. In 2023, he was appointed Chief Executive of Rugby Australia, tasked with steering the code through one of its most challenging periods, aiming to rebuild its grassroots and professional appeal with the same directness he once used to win turnovers.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Phil was born in 1979, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
