The British-born frontman whose gritty, blues-soaked vocals defined the Sunset Strip sleaze-rock sound of L.A. Guns for decades.
Phil Lewis brought a transatlantic swagger to the heart of Los Angeles's 1980s glam metal scene. A Londoner who cut his teeth in bands like Girl (which featured future Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen), Lewis moved to the U.S. just as the Sunset Strip was exploding. In 1987, he joined forces with guitarist Tracii Guns, who had just left the nascent Guns N' Roses. Lewis's voice—a raspy, charismatic instrument less about operatic highs and more about streetwise attitude—proved the perfect match for Guns's down-and-dirty riffs. Their self-titled 1988 debut and its follow-up, 'Cocked & Loaded,' became anthems of the era, with hits like 'The Ballad of Jayne' showcasing a surprising knack for melancholic melody beneath the leather and hairspray. Lewis steered the band through the grunge shift of the 1990s, numerous lineup changes, and even a split that resulted in two rival L.A. Guns entities for a time. His persistence is a testament to a specific, enduring rock 'n' roll ethos. More than just a singer, Lewis became the consistent face of a band that refused to fade, keeping the flame of a particularly raucous L.A. sound alive for generations of fans.
