The original Catman of Kiss, whose thunderous drumming and raw lead vocal on 'Beth' helped define the band's chaotic, theatrical glory.
Before the makeup and pyrotechnics, Peter Criss was a streetwise drummer from Brooklyn with a love for jazz and a raspy, soulful voice. Co-founding Kiss with Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, he created the Catman persona—a sly, whiskered counterpart to the Demon and Starchild. His drumming provided a loose, swinging backbone to the band's early hard rock anthems. Against all odds, his greatest contribution was a ballad: 'Beth,' a plaintive song he co-wrote and sang. Released as a B-side, it became Kiss's biggest hit, softening their image and proving their pop reach. Internal tensions and his own struggles led to his departure in 1980, but his mark was indelible. The original quartet's 1996 reunion tour was a record-shattering phenomenon, reintroducing the world to the primal power of the Catman's beat.

Born between the Depression and the end of WWII. Too young to fight, old enough to remember. They became the conformist middle managers of the 1950s — and the civil rights leaders who quietly dismantled Jim Crow.
Peter was born in 1945, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
