A decorated soldier who led international forces in East Timor, he later served as Australia's governor-general, embodying steady, unifying leadership.
Peter Cosgrove's life has been a march from the battlefield to the viceregal palace. He first captured the national imagination as a young army officer awarded the Military Cross for valor in Vietnam. His defining moment came decades later, when he was tasked with leading the INTERFET peacekeeping force into a volatile East Timor in 1999. His firm, compassionate command was credited with stabilizing the region and he returned home a public hero. After rising to Chief of the Defence Force, he transitioned to ceremonial duty as Governor-General of Australia from 2014 to 2019. In that role, his straightforward decency and military-honed sense of duty provided a pillar of stability in the nation's public life.
1946–1964
The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Peter was born in 1947, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
