A Welsh guitarist nicknamed 'Tonka' for his toughness, whose fiery playing powered the hard rock band UFO through a turbulent and successful era.
Paul Chapman, known universally by the nickname "Tonka," was a Welsh guitarist who brought a raw, blues-infused intensity to the world of 1970s and 80s hard rock. Born in 1954, his indestructible stage presence and relentless playing earned him his moniker, after the famously durable toy trucks. Chapman's career is inextricably linked with UFO, a band he first briefly joined in 1974 before returning as a full member in 1978 to fill the enormous void left by Michael Schenker. This period, from '78 to '83, saw UFO produce some of their most commercially successful and critically praised work, including the live album "Strangers in the Night" and studio LPs like "No Place to Run" and "The Wild, the Willing and the Innocent." Chapman's grittier, less flashy but powerfully driving style gave the band a new, earthier direction. His tenure was marked by relentless touring and a hard-living reputation that embodied rock and roll excess. After leaving UFO, he remained a respected figure in the rock community, playing with bands like Lone Star and Waysted before his death in 2020, leaving behind a legacy of pure, unadulterated guitar force.

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Paul was born in 1954, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
