The sardonic songwriter behind Timbuk 3's 'The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades,' a hit that masked darker themes.
Pat MacDonald, with his wife Barbara K., formed the duo Timbuk 3 in the mid-80s, crafting a minimalist, tape-loop-driven sound that stood out in a synth-pop era. Their signature song, a seemingly sunny anthem with an ironic nuclear edge, became an unexpected MTV and radio staple, earning a Grammy nomination. MacDonald's songwriting, however, was always more attuned to the gritty underbelly of American life—social decay, consumerism, and personal struggle. After the duo split, he embarked on a solo career that leaned into raw, blues-inflected rock, often using homemade instruments like the 'lowebow' (a one-stringed cigar box guitar). Based in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, he has maintained a fiercely independent path, releasing music that is both musically adventurous and lyrically unflinching, far from the glare of his early pop fame.

Pat was born in 1952, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
