The unflappable Swiss goalkeeper whose historic penalty-saving prowess helped his nation achieve an unprecedented World Cup record in 2006.
Pascal Zuberbühler kept a clean sheet through 390 minutes at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, including a penalty shootout against Ukraine. He became the first goalkeeper to save two penalties in a World Cup shootout without conceding a goal from the spot. Switzerland's defense did not let in a single goal in open play throughout the entire tournament. Zuberbühler established himself as a reliable number one in the Swiss Super League before moving to the Bundesliga and later the English Premier League. His international career secured his place in football history. He displayed calm authority and a knack for dramatic moments between the posts. His steely performance in Germany marked him as a tournament specialist and a national team icon.
