A loyal and cunning Italian domestique whose own rare victory in the Giro d'Italia sparked pure, unfiltered emotion.
Paolo Tiralongo carved out a long and respected career in the peloton not as a flashy champion, but as the ultimate reliable teammate. For nearly two decades, he devoted his energy to shepherding team leaders through the mountains of Grand Tours, a selfless role he performed for stars like Alberto Contador and Vincenzo Nibali on the Astana squad. A gritty climber, his moment in the sun came unexpectedly in the 2012 Giro d'Italia. On a brutal stage to the ski resort of Pian dei Resinelli, Tiralongo was set up by his captain Contador but had the strength to finish the job, taking a victory that reduced the hardened veteran to tears and became one of the most heartwarming scenes in modern cycling.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Paolo was born in 1977, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
