A Russian defenseman who carved out a solid NHL career before returning home to become a cornerstone for the KHL's most storied franchise.
Nikita Zaitsev's hockey journey is a transatlantic tale of steady, unflashy reliability. The Moscow-born defenseman wasn't a hyped prospect, but his intelligent two-way game with CSKA Moscow caught the eye of the Toronto Maple Leafs, who signed him in 2016. He immediately stepped into a top-four role in the NHL, logging heavy minutes for a young team on the rise. After three seasons in Toronto and a subsequent trade to Ottawa, Zaitsev played over 400 NHL games, known more for his positional soundness than scoring highlights. In 2023, he returned to Russia, signing with the powerhouse SKA Saint Petersburg. There, his experience and composure have been vital, transitioning from an NHL regular to a key veteran on a KHL contender, completing a full-circle career that underscores his adaptable, durable skill set.
