A 22-year-old flight attendant whose astonishing courage under fire saved hundreds of lives during a terrifying plane hijacking.
Neerja Bhanot’s story is one of luminous bravery compressed into a single, harrowing day. The former model had embraced her new career as a senior flight purser for Pan Am, finding joy in its travel and responsibility. On September 5, 1986, Pan Am Flight 73, en route from Mumbai to New York, was on the ground in Karachi when four armed terrorists stormed the cockpit. With the pilots incapacitated, Bhanot, at 22, became the de facto leader on board. For 17 hours, she maintained a facade of calm, hiding the passports of American passengers to protect them, and secretly relaying information about the hijackers to the authorities outside. When the hijackers opened fire and chaos erupted, her training kicked in. Instead of fleeing, she prioritized the passengers, opening an emergency exit and ushering many to safety. She was shot while shielding three children from gunfire, her final act one of selfless protection. Her actions saved the lives of 359 of the 379 passengers and crew, transforming her into a global symbol of consummate duty and extraordinary heroism.

Neerja was born in 1963, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
