A dominant and durable force in Mauritian politics, shaping the island's modern economy through multiple terms as prime minister.
Navinchandra Ramgoolam led the Labour Party to victory in 1995, becoming Prime Minister of Mauritius. He is the son of the nation's first prime minister, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. Trained as a doctor in London, Ramgoolam returned home and climbed the political ladder. His premierships focused on modernizing Mauritius beyond its sugar-dependent economy, fostering tourism, textiles, and financial services. He oversaw significant infrastructure development and positioned Mauritius as a bridge between Africa and Asia. Ramgoolam proved a master tactician in Mauritius's complex, multi-ethnic politics, returning to power in 2005 and again in 2024.
1946–1964
The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Navin was born in 1947, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
