A mobile, puck-moving defenseman whose infectious energy and resilience carved out a lasting NHL journey across six different franchises.
Nate Schmidt's professional hockey career is a testament to adaptability and an undeniably upbeat personality. Undrafted out of the University of Minnesota, he signed with Washington as a free agent, slowly carving out a role with his smooth skating and offensive instincts from the blue line. His big break came in the 2017 expansion draft, where he was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights. In Vegas, Schmidt blossomed into a top-pairing minute-muncher, his speed perfectly suited for the team's frantic system, and he became a vocal, beloved leader during their improbable run to the Stanley Cup Final in their inaugural season. While subsequent moves to Vancouver, Winnipeg, Florida, and Utah have made him a well-traveled player, Schmidt has maintained a reputation as a reliable, positive presence in any locker room. His game is built on transition and intelligence, a defenseman who starts the rush as effectively as he defends it.
