A young Costa Rican conservationist whose murder on a turtle beach turned him into a global symbol for environmental defenders.
Jairo Mora Sandoval's life was dedicated to the vulnerable leatherback turtles that nested on the beaches of his native Costa Rica. Working for the Wider Caribbean Sea Turtle Conservation Network, he patrolled the remote Moín beach, a dangerous area plagued by egg poachers. On the night of May 30, 2013, his commitment collided with brutal reality. While escorting volunteers, his group was ambushed by masked men. The women escaped, but Mora was kidnapped. He was found dead on the sand the next morning, bound and beaten. His killing sparked international outrage and highlighted the extreme risks faced by grassroots environmentalists. While convictions were eventually secured, Mora's legacy endures as a stark reminder of the cost of protecting our planet's most fragile creatures.
