Biography

Miranda July emerged from the 1990s DIY art and riot grrrl scenes, a multi-hyphenate force who refused to be pinned down. Her early work involved quirky performance art and zines, establishing a voice that was both vulnerably confessional and sharply observant. Her feature film debut, 'Me and You and Everyone We Know,' burst onto the scene in 2005, winning a special jury prize at Cannes for its unique blend of whimsy and poignant insight into loneliness. She didn't stop there, publishing acclaimed short story collections and novels that carried the same distinctive tone. July continually experiments with form, creating interactive websites and public art projects that invite audience participation, making her a defining artist of the digital intimacy age.

Generation X

1965–1980

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.

Miranda was born in 1974, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
